Sheriff Leatherman was elected Sheriff of Noble County November 5, 2002, and took office for his first four-year term January 1, 2003.
In November of 2006, Sheriff Leatherman was re-elected for his second term. The Indiana Constitution limits Indiana Sheriffs to two (2) consecutive four-year terms. Sheriff Leatherman began his law enforcement career in 1974 as a Trooper with the Indiana State Police, serving primarily in Noble County until 1984. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal, performing post command functions at the Fort Wayne Post. After his promotion to Sergeant in 1988, Leatherman supervised the Troopers assigned to both LaGrange and Noble Counties until his retirement from the State Police in December of 2002.
Sheriff Gary Leatherman
Prior to joining the ISP, Sheriff Leatherman served in the Army National Guard for six years. He was the Outstanding Graduate of his Advanced Training Class, Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He became a Commissioned Officer after completing Officer Candidate School, and was assigned to an Infantry Combat Support Company, where he served as Company Executive Officer, Missile Platoon Leader, and finally as the Reconnaissance (Scout) Platoon Leader.
Sheriff Leatherman’s wife of 36 years, Cindy, is a school nurse for the Central Noble Community School Corporation. Their son, Marc, is a Trooper with the Indiana State Police, Fort Wayne Post, and is assigned to Noble County. Marc and his wife, Amy, have a daughter, Camryn. Their daughter, Jamie, is a teacher with the Oak Farm Montessori School in Avilla, and is married to David Worman, a Deputy with the Noble County Sheriff’s Department. They have three children, Ryan, Lydia and Isabella. |
